Here's the deal: I'm OBSESSED with long hair. If shorter hair is your thing then awesome! I LOVE how shorter hair looks so good and so chic on so many people, its just not for me. Every-time I've convinced myself in the past that I wanted to go short I regretted it within minutes of walking out of the salon and would spend endless hours on the internet researching how to grow my hair back.
After making the mistake of cutting it too many times, it finally grew back and I maintained long hair for a long time before deciding I wanted to be blonde. I had ZERO clue on the effects that being blonde could do to my long healthy hair. Once I went down the blonde route, my hair would break constantly and it became known that the biggest difference between my twin sister and I was that she was the twin with the dark long hair and I was the twin with the short blonde hair. During this time I discovered MAMA AFRICA. For those of you who know what that is- it's THE BEST place in Montreal to get extensions. You literally buy a bag of hair and then sew in the clips. If you catch them on a less busy day they will even sew in the clips for you.
So this became my hair life. For years I had broken damaged blonde hair that I would conceal with extensions.
It wasn't until 2015 when I met a hair stylist who told me I could be blonde and have long hair. WHAT??!!! I thought this wasn't possible. By incorporating his tips and a few that I have learn't over the years (ALL LISTED BELOW) my hair grew like 6 inches in 4 months. I don't know if this is the exact number but pretty much my hair went from short to long in a very short time WHILE STILL BEING A BLONDE!
Today I will wear extensions from time to time for an event or photo shoot but nothing feels better than having your own healthy long hair. All of my tips are below. I promise you, if you follow even one or two of these you will see a change. All product info tagged in each tip below.
1- PICK A GOOD SHAMPOO
People don't realize how important this is. Make sure whatever shampoo you're using is free of harsh cleaning agents and that it's a trusted brand. Lately I've been using Mon Shampoing and LOVE how my hair feels after I wash it out.
2- GET A WET BRUSH ASAP
If you want long hair and don't have a wet brush you are making a big mistake sorry not sorry. Wet hair is prone to damage and breakage. Brushing broken hair with a regular brush LITERALLY RIPS OUT YOUR HAIR. Get yourself a wet brush ASAP.
Simply put Olaplex is life. Olaplex includes a patented active ingredient that works on a molecular level to seek out broken bonds in the hair that are caused by chemical, thermal, and mechanical damage. In short- it literally repairs broken hair. There are 3 steps. 2 used in salon and one at home. If your hair colourist doesn't know what this is I suggest finding a new hair colourist ASAP. Just being honest here.
When I was doing highlights I was dying my hair every 8-10 weeks. With balayage I went from every 8-10 weeks to 2-3 times a year max.
When I began my fitness journey a few years ago and changed my diet I also noticed a huge change in my hair. Below is a list of some foods to incorporate into your diet to grow strong healthy hair. Its all about the healthy fats!
- Nuts. Nuts such as almonds, walnuts, and pecans are a great source of biotin, a vitamin known to help promote hair growth. ...
- Oysters. ...
- Eggs. ...
- Salmon. ...
- Chia and Flax Seeds. ...
- Sweet Potatoes. ...
6- WASH YOUR HAIR LESS
The more you shampoo your hair, the more you are removing healthy oils from your hair that protect and keep your hair healthy. The less you wash it the less you have to blow dry and straighten/curl, and the less heat the better! Dry shampoo is your friend!
Long story short. The above MAJORLY changed my hair care game for the better.
